When faced with unpleasant thoughts and feelings, we often focus on how to get rid of our anxiety so we do not have to sit in the discomfort. While “getting rid of anxiety” may sound ideal, attempting to do so often makes the experience worse and may even intensify these unavoidable feelings and sensations. The more we try to push the anxiety away, the more our minds become consumed by the worry, rumination, and fear. We may find that anxiety grabs such ahold over us that we are no longer able to be present in our relationships, at school or work, and in life.
